What is PR?
Public Relations is the public face of an organisation and today is an integral part of effectively communicating with the wider world (and even your own employees!).
PR is very powerful, influencing what others think and say about your organisation, and through that, shaping your reputation. Through sustained effort, it can improve the understanding of the public and facilitate change.
When negative stories appear in the media, they are often referred to as being a 'PR disaster', yet positive PR and the substantial associated benefits are less widely publicised.
It is an important part of a company's marketing mix and is not only about maintaining positive relationships with journalists, but also includes managing effective events & press conferences, media relations and defining goals and conceiving strategies.
PR is expensive, yet the potential rewards for every pound invested are huge, resulting in impressive value for money.
What is achievable through PR?
- Raising the profile of an organisation
- Quality editorial coverage in the appropriate media
- NOT getting media coverage!
- Measurable results against a predertermined plan
- Improved internal communication
- Increase profits
When compared with advertising, PR is far more subtle. A co-ordinated PR campaign in conjunction with advertising can produce results far exceeding that of advertising alone. In such cases, the advertising is then viewed as reinforcing what has already been seen in press editorial, or broadcast journalism, with their perceived impartiality (both of which are popularly believed to me more credible than advertisements).
